Career
I work for Advanstar Communications as a database administrator
on the SQL Server databases. I maintain a SQL Server blog at
SQLJunkies.com
This has been an exciting year, because I've passed the tests to be certified by Microsoft on the new SQL Server 2005,
and now have these certifications:
- Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT)
- Microsoft Certified IT Professional:
- Database Developer
- Database Administrator
- Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: SQL Server 2005
Then, I was selected to present at the 2006 PASS Community Summit. My
presentation is called DBA-201: Using SMO to create custom SQL Server Management solutions and will be on 11/15/2006 from 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM.

Theatre
I performed and directed shows at
the Olde Towne Hall Theatre in North Ridgeville, Ohio for 21 years.
More recently I've been freelancing, having performed in Fred Sternfeld's
Fiddler on the Roof
at Cain Park in 2003 and Ragtime at the JCC in 2004.
At the Beck Center for Performing Arts in Lakewood I was in 1776 in 2003 and Aida in 2005, and
directed Annie Get Your Gun in 2005 with the Hudson Players.
I've also created a musical review called To My Pious Friends and Drunken Companions, which was performed
April, 2004 at a benefit for the Brunswick Education Foundation. It needs more work.
I directed Camelot at the Olde Towne Hall Theatre
last winter, with performances in February and March, 2007.

Running
I started running about a year after Ryle was born. I became hooked when I ran my first race,
through the streets of downtown Cleveland (it was the old 'Run with the Browns and Indians' race),
and people were applauding! I loved it! I then started running longer distances - egged on by
my old friend, Rick Pinch - and got into running marathons. I also joined the Cleveland
West Road Runners Club so I'd be informed of more races, and started running with the group,
where I met some of my closest friends. My goal is to run a marathon in all 50 states, plus
Washington, DC. I've got 22 states plus DC to date. In 2006 I ran 6 marathons, and in March 2007 I completed the
Olathe Marathon in Olathe, KS (5:31).

Flying
Some time in the 1980's I developed an interest in flying, but didn't feel I had the means to
pursue it. Then, in 1997, a running friend was taking ground school at an airport in Wadsworth
called Skypark, and he gave me a price breakdown for getting a pilot's license. The price was
very reasonable, so I started their ground school (offered each year in January) in 1998. I
finished up my ground school work in May and then started flying with Aaron Hershberger, a college
student who worked summers as a flight instructor (CFII). By flying with him 3-4 times a week I
was able to fly solo my first time on July 2, 1998, and passed my checkride and got my license on
September 12, 1998.
